AI Could Predict Heart Disease Through Overnight Sleep

A new development in artificial intelligence could change how doctors identify patients at risk of serious cardiovascular conditions.

Researchers supported by the U.S. National Institutes of Health have demonstrated that AI can analyze heart activity recorded during overnight sleep studies to help predict the risk of cardiovascular problems years before they occur.

The findings suggest that information already collected during routine medical testing could become a valuable tool for earlier detection and preventive healthcare.

The Connection Between Sleep and Heart Health

Sleep plays an important role in cardiovascular health, affecting blood pressure, heart rhythm, metabolism, and overall physical recovery.

Poor sleep quality and conditions such as obstructive sleep apnea have been associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

During a standard overnight sleep study, known as polysomnography, medical specialists record several physiological signals, including breathing patterns, sleep stages, and electrical activity from the heart.

Although these recordings are primarily used to investigate sleep disorders, researchers believe they contain additional information about long-term cardiovascular health.

The study demonstrates how artificial intelligence could uncover medical insights from existing diagnostic tests, an important subject explored in HealX Magazine’s Health coverage.

How the AI System Works

According to the National Institutes of Health, researchers developed a deep-learning model capable of analyzing electrocardiogram recordings collected during overnight sleep studies.

By combining heart rhythm information with sleep-stage data, the system identified patterns associated with future cardiovascular complications.

The research involved model development using information from more than 15,000 patients at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Researchers then evaluated its performance using additional patient datasets from Emory University Hospital and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

The model identified associations with several important health outcomes, including atrial fibrillation, heart failure, and mortality.

Its predictions considered cardiovascular risks extending up to ten years after the original sleep examination.

Moving Toward Earlier Prevention

One potential advantage is that this technology could make better use of tests patients are already undergoing.

Rather than requiring a completely new examination, doctors might eventually extract additional cardiovascular information from existing sleep recordings.

This approach could support more personalized risk assessments and encourage earlier medical intervention.

However, further investigation is required to establish whether AI-based predictions improve clinical decisions beyond conventional cardiovascular risk assessments.

A New Era of Predictive Healthcare

The research represents another step toward preventive medicine, where emerging technologies may help identify potential diseases before symptoms develop.

Future studies will need to establish how these predictions should be integrated into routine medical practice.

For patients and healthcare professionals, the findings demonstrate the growing potential of combining artificial intelligence with traditional diagnostic technology.
